If there is one memory of my childhood that remains crystal clear--even to this day--it was the crayons. I'm sure this is the same for most, as crayons have been a part of everyone's lives at one point or another, relieving our boredom and allowing us to have fun, even in the most monotonous of situations.
I think Crayola saw a need and fit the bill. Kids needed to be entertained, and coloring was the way to do it! There were crayons at the doctor’s office, at restaurants, in the beauty shop where my mom got her hair done, the nail shop, and school of course. We had crayons in the car, in the house, and at school. I wouldn’t be surprised if my mom carried crayons in her purse. I colored my fair share of coloring books and other bits of paper. I loved getting the collector’s boxes for my birthday or for Christmas. You know which one I’m talking about; the one with the bonus. Oh yeah – the build in sharpener! You know you were the coolest if you could re-sharpen your crayons right there on the box and keep on coloring.
You should give the good ol 1980s standby a try for the next children’s party you have. Party crayons can just be tossed about, I’m pretty sure some child will pick them up and start coloring with them, and all the others will follow suit. When I was old enough (and I stopped coloring on the walls even after repeated spankings) I got to upgrade to markers. That’s a whole different story. When I got my first box of markers, I knew I had arrived to the next level of childhood.
