Turn your home into the Big Easy with these ideas:
Host the party is an open area such as a park or big backyard, allowing enough room for a Mardi Gras parade. Set up tents and decorate them in the colors of Mardi Gras: gold for power, purple for justice, and green for faith. Hang crepe-paper streamers, balloons, glittery masks, lanterns, and beads. Mardi Gras life size cutouts are also available online. Light a “Fat Tuesday” neon sign, and scatter signs for New Orleans landmarks like “Bourbon Street” and “The French Quarter” throughout the party area.
Wear flamboyant costumes with beads, feathers and fringe, masks, and jewelry. You’ll fit right in with a Jester costume or queen/king of Mardi Gras costume. Throw beads to the crowds, and hand out party poppers as party favors.
Hire a jazz band to entertain the crowd. Or, set up an area for guests to try out instruments like tambourines, saxophones, drums, and trumpets. Display large photos of famous jazz musicians from New Orleans.
Set up a delicious Cajun feast with New Orleans favorites. Jambalaya, shrimp jumbo, red beans and rice, sweet potatoes, boiled crawfish, and other seafood dishes. Do not forget the most important part of the meal: King’s cake. It is a New Orleans Mardi Gras tradition to hide a plastic baby in the King’s cake. The person who finds the plastic baby traditionally hosts the next Mardi Gras party. Serve it all on Mardi Gras theme dinner plates, napkins, cups, bowls, and table covers.
Enjoy the party, but do some good by setting up a donation jar to rebuild New Orleans.
