Rosh Hashanah Party Theme
Celebrate the Jewish New Year with a Rosh Hashanah dinner and get-together. Rosh Hashanah occurs in the month of September, on the first and second day of Tishrei. After religious services at the synagogue, enjoy a nice meal with friends and family.
It is customary to eat sweet foods, which symbolize good fortune in the coming year, on Rosh Hashanah. Common foods are honey-dipped apples, challah, and carrots. The Rosh Hashanah challah, or bread, is rounded, and some families add bird or ladder designs on it. Other food ideas are salmon and goat cheese pizza, honey-glazed spicy chicken, spinach, raisins, and sweet potatoes.
Another tradition is casting off, or walking alongside water and reciting prayers. Remember that Rosh Hashanah is a day of judgment. On the day before, it is customary to visit the graves of tzaddikim, or righteous people. Men traditionally visit the mikvah, or ritual pool.
