I'll try to keep this in point form, but it'll still be long:
1. Unreliable: Myrna had cancelled more than one appt, on the day of, due to personal commitments, such as forgetting she had a ball game for her son. This is after having to arrange a car to drive out to Surrey in traffic to make the appointments.
2. Prioritizes herself: see above for one example. Also, she made me make an appointment to drive out to her studio to physically drop off the cheque for the deposit and final payments, but yet could not make herself available the entire month of August so I could even pick up my dress before my September wedding.
3. No accountability: Tried the sample dress at an actual bridal store and got measurements from them, BUT also forwarded her 2 other sets of measurements. These ranged from size 2 to 8. Myrna made me make the trip out to her studio to drop off a cheque, but did not even bother to take my measurements. When the dress came in, it was a full size too small (and the only way my hips, for example, could've increased in size by 5" would be to have had a baby...we were re-measuring on my hip bones, literally!). I asked her to subsidize the extra costs of taking out all the seams ($180), as she didn't bother to take my measurements, and her reply was, "not her fault", as she was just an "order service" to me. She even went on to tell me even the store who took the wrong measurements would even stand by their measurements. If you missed it from above, the hips measured 5" FULLER ON MY HIP BONES and ASIAN BUTT, than compared to the initial measurements taken only 5 months prior. And no, I did not have a baby in that time to expand my hip bones.
4. Unprofessional: Many times I had to write her an email in response to my own email, as she would "forget" to reply to me. Also, one of the funniest replies she sent me was when she tried to stand by her professional character and service to "her brides" (her words, not mine) by saying she "spent 4 days steaming the gown and delivered it to the tailor for you." First off, why did it take her 4 days to steam? It only had a chapel train and had some beadwork, but that's it. Second, she dropped it off to the tailor who lived literally 5min from her (not me), whom she referred, because she was not going to make herself avail the entire month of Aug for me to pick up the dress at her studio.
5. Disreputable: She STRONGY suggested I order a petite, in which case I told her I was not petite, but 5'6" and always wear 3-4" heels. She responded this particular designer makes such long gowns that even her 5'8" brides can get away with petite, but if I wanted to order a regular and pay for hemming, it was my choice. Let's just say even in barefeet the hemline was already hovering 1cm from the ground. Also, I had to order rush so it would come in time, so I paid the extra charge. Myrna said it would come by July 15th (she'll say she never promised that). It never arrived until the first week of Aug, and that's after I emailed her 3 times to check on the status on my gown. I asked her, what if my wedding was in Aug? In response, Myrna stated she never promised it would arrive by that date, and if my wedding was in Aug, she would never order it for me.
I was very calm during this entire wedding planning, and only expected the professionals in the business would make this very expensive purchase, easy and enjoyable. Instead it was easily the worst retail experience I've ever had. When I asked Myrna to please help rectify the situation by being accountable to some of the issues by reimbursing some of the tailor's costs, she said it was not her fault and couldn't believe I would put blame on her. It wasn't until I was able to sit down and recount the events leading up to terrible experience, was I able to see there were signs along the way of how poorly she managed her business and what a cash grab she saw it to be. Up to that point I was still going to recommend her to future brides to save a couple dollars, but in hindsight, it would be totally irresponsible for me to do so, and jeopardize another girl's dreams of an experience that should be wonderful.
My advice, stay with a bridal store who can provide you professional service. The extra dollars are not only for their actual stores and displays, but for the professional service and hours you can expect for a seamless experience. |
