| Description |

The Sixth & I Historic Synagogue provides a unique Jewish and historical presence, connection and meeting place in the center of Washington, DC, the Nations capital. The synagogue enhances Jewish life in the city by providing a place where individuals, groups and organizations may gather to worship, study and socialize. As business, retail and residential life experience a rebirth in the neighborhood, the Sixth & I Historic Synagogue takes it place as an anchor in the revitalization of the citys downtown core -- a beautiful and meaningful link between the citys past, present and future.
From its exquisite stained glass windows to its soaring arches and vaulted ceiling, the Sixth & I Historic Synagogue is an architectural masterpiece. Completed in 1908 as the second home for the Adas Israel Congregation, the structure serves as a superlative example of American synagogue architecture of the early twentieth century. Baltimore architect Louis Levi drew on Moorish, Byzantine and Romanesque influences to design a building both rich and reverent. |
